I have 20 years’ experience of cutting and constructing men’s and women’s period costume, underpinned by an extensive knowledge of dress history. This has given me a thorough understanding of the processes, pressures and requirements of a costume department.
Working in collaboration with designers and costume supervisors, I have a proven track record of interpreting design drawings and ideas to make high quality costumes for theatre, ballet, opera, tv and film.
I will work to your specifications and deliver on time with a professional and approachable attitude. If you would like to find out more or check my availability please contact me.
In addition to my costume work I take commissions from individuals. I work from personal measurements to produce well-made garments with professional fit and finish. Drawing on my knowledge of dress history I can meet your requirements whether it is something historically accurate, with a period feel or simply a classic 3 piece suit.
If you would like more information please contact me.
I can interpret a drawing, image or work from a description to come to an agreed design. I am skilled in all the processes from taking measurements through drafting the pattern to sewing the last button on. I can also source the fabrics, linings and any other outfitting needs you may have from my broad knowledge of textile merchants, haberdashers and suppliers. Once I have cut the pattern and part completed your garments we will meet again for fittings and to finalise the design details.
Your bespoke garment will be made with pride, care and attention to detail, using traditional skills to ensure a beautiful fit.
I trained as a theatre costume cutter/maker at Liverpool City College (aka Mabel Fletchers).
I have extensive experience of cutting and making both men’s and women’s period costume. I have worked as cutter and costume supervisor on a wide variety of productions and for many companies including Opera North, RSC, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Sheffield Theatres. My continuing fascination with dress history informs my work and inspires me to investigate cut and construction of historical clothing, particularly 18th-20th century tailoring.
I am based in Sheffield which is ideally placed for road and rail links making travel for meetings, fittings and location work convenient.
'Becky Graham is a consummately professional costume maker.
She makes costumes to the highest standards of fit and finish and is reliable and dependable. It has been my privilege to have worked with her on a number of productions over a long period of time with a number of different designers and the costumes that she has supplied have always been of the highest standard and in addition, excellent interpretations of the designer's original concept.'
'As a costume designer I have Becky Graham at the top of my list, she is very creative, and the cut and finish is always exquisite.
Becky is also very organised and never forgets our first discussion so her fittings are always a dream. I would not hesitate to recommend Becky.'
'Becky has excellent cut and construction skills, combined with an ability to interpret design drawings with flair and historical accuracy.
She is able to work to a budget, and handle large or small projects in a supervisory capacity or as part of a team and her happy and positive attitude is always a bonus in our often pressured environment.'
'Gorgeous materials, wonderful detail and vintage buttons that often start conversation. In fact, I was so impressed with the design, cut and fit, I wore it to meet the Queen. (Honestly!!)
I asked Becky to design some workwear that would stand up to extreme wear and tear and was based in traditional English design. She designed two beautiful jackets made from heavy organic cotton that I wear constantly. These are garments that will stay with me throughout my making career.' www.ninabilbey.com
